BMW has revealed the first images of its i8 Concept Spyder hybrid ahead of its official debut at the Beijing Motor Show.

BMW will be offering the new i8 in coupe as well as in this convertible form from 2014.

Like the i8 coupe, this car has a plug-in hybrid powertrain which produces 349bhp and 406lb ft of torque with the combination of a 129bhp electric motor and a 220bhp three-cylinder turbo petrol engine.

BMW is quoting 0-62mph in five seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph with fuel economy of 94mpg.

The i8 Concept Spyder hybrid can be charged in “less than two hours” and can run solely on EV power for 19 miles. The lithium-ion battery can also recharge when coasting or with regenerative braking.

More details about the car will be revealed at the Beijing Motor Show on April 23.
