Toyota has issued a recall across Europe due to a problem with the accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.
The problem will not be on all vehicles but the manufacturer has issued the recall as a precaution.
Toyota explained the problem: "This is caused because the accelerator pedal mechanisms concerned may become worn.
"This progressive wear, combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, can cause friction in the mechanism to increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being harder to depress, slow to return or, in the worst case, stick in a partially open position.
"In case of occurrence, the driver may notice that the accelerator pedal is progressively harder to depress or is slower to return. A rough or chattered feeling may also be experienced when depressing/releasing the accelerator pedal."
Toyota will communicate directly to customers with vehicles potentially affected. The models and exact number of potentially affected vehicles is under investigation.
A running change in production using different parts has already been implemented model-by-model in the European production. Therefore there is no need or intention to stop production in Europe.

It is asserted by people in the USA that 19 people have died and over 300 injured in the USA over many years. It is asserted that Toyota have known about this problem for many years, well over 5. Since 2002 according to some sources.
Surely car companies do not recall more than 9 million vehicles without there actually being a very serious problem. Which will obviously have gone back many years.
In October 2009, Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda, was forced to publicly apologise for the tragic death of an American family who were killed when their Toyota vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control.
Instead of blah-blah-blah copy-pasting of Toyota press releases, AM should use journalistic skills to uncover the TRUTH, whatever that is. Otherwise AM seems to be a mouthpiece for automotive industry cover-ups.
Can we have a big article detailing the full history and truth, please? Going back to 2002?
To me, this "deny at all costs" reaction that seems to have been going on for years by Toyota seems typical (of the industry). Now, in the days of instant information and the internet, any chance of just telling the truth in full detail?
My bloody customers are at risk from this, and I have been selling these faulty cars without knowledge of any problem, despite alleged knowledge of Toyota. That makes me very mad. Doesn't it make the Toyota/Lexus dealers mad, who read this?
