Honda has revealed a new engine series at the Tokyo Motor Show which will blend strong performance with environmental efficiency.
The first in the series, named 'Earth Dreams Technology', will be a lightweight 1.6-litre diesel unit which has sub-100g/km CO2 emissions but achieves 119bhp.
It will reach European markets in late 2012, and will feature first in the new Civic.
Honda aims to be number one in each market segment for fuel efficiency within three years.
