Caffyns, the AM100 car dealer group in southern England, has sold a Volvo dealership.

The business in Hove, near Brighton, also had a Ford retail dealership and has been bought by Dinnages Garages, which already represents Ford and Renault.

Caffyns said the £417,000 realised will be applied in reducing its debts and for reinvestment in the business.

Caffyns now represents Volvo in Eastbourne only, according to data from AMi (www.am-online.com/ami).

Caffyns has also exchanged contracts with Wilmington Homes for the £600,000 purchase of a vacant freehold site at Worthing on which it hopes to build a new Volkswagen dealership.

Once planning permission is gained, this development will replace Caffyns' current VW dealership in Goring-by-Sea.

Volvo Car UK

Volvo has ambitious plans to grow its sales to fleets by up to 70% over the next decade. The increase reflects recent strong performances in the fleet market. In 2010 it achieved just short of 20,000 company car registrations, a 20% rise on 2009.

Demand will be driven in part by its low CO2 offering, including the S60 with emissions of 124g.km and 60mpg fuel economy. It is particularly targeting SMEs, which it classifies as fleets of 5-100 cars.

Volvo is also putting greater emphasis on sales of parts and retail service hours. Volvo has been supporting dealers in getting their message across about the value of their services.

Recent examination of local independent rivals found that in five out of eight cases the independent was not cheaper.
