An industry insider has told AM September registrations will be down by 40,000 units at the start of this week.

The industry was expecting a drop of 18,000 units in comparison to September 2009.

The spectre of pre-registration will loom over September as businesses strive to meet sales targets in the eleventh hour.

AM’s latest poll reflects how slow the plate change month has gone in comparison with over 90% saying September was worse than they expected.

One dealer said: “Its been very difficult, probably the hardest plate change month we’ve experienced.

"Showroom traffic is very erratic. It’s evident customers are being cautious, especially when taking on the burden of finance. Used cars are erratic too; however, we are seeing improvements in that area.”

More comments from the AM poll:

“No where near expectations - still some economic uncertainty out there and supply/logistical issues from our manufacturer.”

“Disappointing August build up with September itself not improving matters to the level expected.”

“Various franchise differences but overall circa 30% down on 2009.”

“Went into month with a reasonable order bank but during the month we have experienced the lowest footfall and weekly order take since September registrations started.”

“It's been a stop/start month with low showroom footfall. A lot of customers seem unexcited about the plate change. The media are beginning to worry the general public with the headlines of double dip, lower house prices and the possible increase in interest rates early next year.”

“A lower volume of retail and small business prospects added to supply constraints on new vehicles is making this September very challenging.”

“I think manufacturers need to wake up to market conditions and start to help their networks, not push for a market share that does not exist.”
