Dealers have been making better profit from disposals of unwanted part-exchanges this year, according to data from British Car Auctions (BCA).

Les Butler, BCA’s dealer training manager, told members of the National Franchised Dealers Association that on average disposals are making 109.87% of stand in value (SIV), equating to around £168 profit per car.

Last year disposals were averaging 100.41% of SIV, or barely £11 profit per car.

Butler said the key to getting best price for part-exchanges was providing service history and V5 whenever possible.

BCA said volumes of part-exchanges sold through its halls were on track to reach 200,000 units this year, down slightly on the 208,000 of 2008.

The average price achieved has risen from £2,838 last year to £2,927 this year. However Butler said this may be partly due to the scrappage scheme taking out low-end part-exchanges.

BCA is currently being touted for sale by its owner.
