Renault UK is considering whether to establish a separate retail network for its value-segment Logan four-door saloon, which goes on sale here in 2007.

Spokesman Graeme Holt says the decision will be taken according to consumer response to the car’s launch in France in July. “However, the signs look good. With an objective of 700,000 global sales annually by 2010, the Logan is set to become our biggest volume product,” says Holt.

“Around 25% of our volume is handled by the 30 large retail sites we operate, and we think that around 180 other dealerships in the network are big enough to accommodate separate showrooms on site. However, if it seems likely that annual volumes of the Logan will exceed 25,000, we’ll set up a standalone Dacia network.”

Renault has announced a joint venture with Mahindra, India’s fourth largest carmaker, to build right-hand drive Logans to be sold in the UK.

“Initial volume has been set at 50,000 units, but this is a conservative figure, to say the least,” says Holt. “We already feel it is likely that the UK will be accounting for upwards of 30,000 cars because so much car has never been offered for so little money.”

The entry-level will cost less than £5,500 despite having anti-lock brakes and front airbags. A higher-spec model with remote central locking, power windows and power mirrors will cost less than £7,500. Estates add £500.
