Peugeot is to launch a rental business in the UK next year called Mu which will see customers able to rent cars, vans, bikes and scooters from London Peugeot dealerships.

Mu will be launched in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam before the end of the year before heading to the UK next summer.

The new concept is part of the French manufacturer’s plans to gain market share and to get back into profit by 2012.

Customers will can pay monthly for mobility points to spend on their card which they can take into any London Peugeot dealership to rent a vehicle.

The pilot scheme in France offers a 207 for 280 points a day or £50 and for the same cost customers can rent a scooter for three days. A bicycle will be available at the cost of £5 a day.

According to Peugeot’s French website for Mu customers can apply for an account online or at the dealership. A card is then sent through the post and it can be loaded with points which customers can spend on the vehicle they need. Customers can sign up for a monthly subscription or just top up the card as and when they need it.

A spokesman for Peugeot said: “We’re the only manufacturer that can offer all these different modes of transport so it’s perfect for us.

“We’re starting off in London but it’s possible it could be launched in other major metropolitan cities if it takes off.”

Peugeot said it would help generate extra income from stock sitting in dealership car parks. The scheme will also be another reason for customers to visit showrooms increasing contact and possible sales opportunities.
