2: Wear your values on your sleeve

The motor retail industry hasn’t had the greatest reputation and is sometimes seen by wandering salespeople as a stop-gap to another sector rather than an industry offering a rewarding, lifetime career.

Encouraging new recruits to understand and engage in the defined values of the company can be one method of demonstrating that it is a place to stay. Vauxhall and Kia dealer group Wilson And Co recently asked a team of staff members to define its corporate values. Managing director Robin Wilson said the result – connected, consistent, confident, communicating and continuously improving – puts great emphasis on the ‘Co’ in its name, to demonstrate that everyone’s part in the business is valued and crucial.

The values are the cornerstone of a whole new focus on its people, says Wilson.

“Customer satisfaction is parallel to staff satisfaction. This is us telling people where we want to take the business. More people know there are opportunities to go as far as they want to. I started as a trainee vehicle salesperson and now run this group, so anything is possible if they have the determination.”
