Alfa Romeo has begun the electrification of its model range with the opening order books for the Tonale plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV.

Prices start at £44,595 for the Italian brand’s new zero-emissions-capable model, which claims CO2 emissions of 29g/km, combined fuel consumption of 217.3mpg in the WLTP cycle and over 49 miles of full-electric range from its 284PS all-wheel-drive powertrain.

AM reported from the launch of the new Alfa Romeo Tonale, which shares a platform with its Stellantis sibling the Jeep Compass, late last year.

In the new PHEV model choice of Ti (from £44,595) and Veloce (from £48,495) trims make up the standard trim line-up, with 48-month, 8% APR representative PCP finance offers making the former available for £445 and the latter £545 with a customer deposit of £9,899.

Alfa Romeo’s Plug-in Hybrid Q4 drivetrain combines a 1.3-litre turbocharged MultiAir, four-cylinder engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission to provide traction to the front axle, with an electric motor capable of supplying 90kW of max peak power and 250 Nm of torque to the rear axle. 

Its 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery can be charged in less than two-and-a-half hours from a 7.4 kW charger.

The Tonale PHEV’s claimed on road performance will see it accelerate to 62mph in just 6.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 128mph.

Adjustable dynamics are offered by Alfa Romeo’s ‘Alfa D.N.A.’ drive selector, meanwhile, serving-up Dynamic mode, Natural and Advanced Efficiency modes.

The latter of these allows the Tonale PHEV to decouple its gearbox in a ‘sailing mode’ to save fuel while coasting.

Amazon Alexa integration is at the heart of a brand-new infotainment system featuring 4G connectivity with Over The Air (OTA) updates, meanwhile.

Incorporating 12.3-inch and 10.25-inch screens, the system affords new functionality including: E-control; Dynamic Range Mapping; a Charging Station Finder; and My eCharge, which the My Alfa Connect app to directly access Free2Move eSolutions services to manage public and private charging.

Trim grades

As standard, the Ti grade Tonale PHEV is distinguished by a satin chrome V front bezel, 18-inch dark finish diamond cut alloy wheels, a gloss-black body kit and black cloth upholstery.   

Veloce features a dark miron V front bezel, veloce badging and body kit, 19-inch dark finish diamond cut alloys and red painted Brembo brake callipers. 

Inside, the Veloce adds aluminium door sills and aluminium shift paddles along with black and red Alcantara upholstery.

The limited-run Speciale launch version sports a gloss black body kit with titanium side and front inserts, a Speciale badging, 20-inch alloys, metal pedals and red Brembo brake callipers.
