Seat has expanded its Leon range further with the addition of new Cupra models, which will be the fastest front-wheel drive hot hatches on sale in the UK when they become available in March.

The Cupra 280 features 276bhp from a 2.0-litre which will hit 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds and will go on to a limited top speed of 155mph. All manual versions return over 44mpg.

The performance figures mean the Cupra 280 has more power on offer than a Lotus Elise and Porsche Boxster.

The new models will be available as a three door SC or five door and prices range between £25,690 for the entry SC Cupra with 263bhp, to £28,525 for the Cupra 280 DSG five-door. All models come with a mechanical limited-slip front differential which aims to reduce understeer and improving traction. Seat also claims it has eliminated torque-steer, and that new dual-stage ESC settings will look after inexperienced drivers on track, but allow expert drivers to switch all assistance features off. Drivers can choose from three driving modes which change the characteristics of the Cupra’s set up – Comfort, Sport and Cupra.

The Leon has picked up Car of the Year awards from consumer magazine and been winning group tests against established C-segment competitors. The full Leon range includes the SC, estate, hatch and now the Cupra.

Exterior design features a new front end, large air intakes, LED headlamps, rear skirt with diffuer and two oval exhaust pipes. The Cupra models feature exclusive alloy wheels, red brake callipers and tinted side and rear windows.

Interior equipment includes Cupra sports steering wheel, sports seats in dark grey Alcantara finished with white stitching or black full-leather upholstery with white stitching, as well as aluminium pedals.

In the UK, additional standard equipment for the Leon Cupra over and above the FR model includes 18-inch alloy wheels, full-LED headlights, DAB digital radio, Seat Media System Plus, aluminium front door sill trims with Cupra logo, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights.

The Cupra 280 is distinguishable by its standard 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss black mirror caps, black exterior mouldings and frames, black rear roof spoiler, red brake callipers with Cupra logo, and black interior inserts. Satellite navigation comes as standard with the Cupra 280, too.

Order books are now open for the Cupra and Cupra 280.
