Halfords Autocentres has changed and relaunched its 'MoT guarantee' product ahead of peak MoT season in March.

The independent garage chain’s new offers is cheaper and, it says, more relevant to the needs of customers.

The price is reduced from £75 to £39.95 for a one year plan that now also covers many of the new MoT items introduced during 2013 – such as dashboard warning lights and drive shaft wear.

Halfords Autocentres’ Rory Carlin said: "“By analysing the average cost of MoT-related repairs under the old scheme, we have been able to create a product that still provides sufficient cover and peace of mind but at almost half the cost – protecting drivers from unexpected and unwelcome repair bills.”

The 'MoT guarantee' covers mechanical or electrical repairs up to the value of £300 (excluding VAT) for cars up to 10 years old or 100,000 miles.

To qualify for the 'MoT guarantee' drivers must have had their vehicle serviced with Halfords Autocentres in the past three months or elect to have their car service carried out at the same time as their MoT – which would then provide cover for the following year.

Because of the vehicle background checks that are required, the 'MoT guarantee' is not available online but can be purchased from any of the 300 participating Autocentres in UK.

Carlin said: “By weeding out poorly maintained vehicles, we can reward those customers who look after theirs with lower prices.

“This takes the sting out of unexpected MoT repair bills and reduces the stress as well as financial strain they can place on motorists.”
