Day’s is a family-run business employing more than 550 people working at 14 locations. For 2014, budgets were set for a pre-tax profit of £6.7 million, yet at the end of the year this South West and Wales group was expected to finish at about £8.5m.

While ranked 57th in the recent AM100, Day’s beats all other dealers for return on sales, profit per staff member and profit per outlet.

Recent innovations include the introduction of video health checks in all of its service departments, with a resultant increase of 20% red work and 10% on amber. Responding to used car customer enquiries via video and expansion of rental operations has exceeded expectations, with more than 200 vehicles on hire within four months of opening.

The AM judges said if you want to make money, follow this business model. Day’s is fulfilling customers’ entire motoring needs with determined thoroughness and each of its sites is performing well with volume, non-prestige brands. Boasting a net margin of 3.6%, the group is a “well oiled machine with strong processes throughout – a cutting edge group with an engaged workforce”, said BDO.
