Review

Volvo's new five-cylinder 2.4-litre common rail diesel engine is now available to order in its S60, V70 and S80 ranges. Badged D5, the new engine is the first diesel actually designed and built by the Ford-owned manufacturer for its cars.

It boasts low carbon dioxide emissions of 158g/km, power output of 163bhp and average fuel economy of up to 47.1mpg. All D5 models will have a standard five-speed manual gearbox, while an automatic transmission option will be available early in 2002.

On-the-road entry price in the S60 sports salon range is £30,750 - £755 above the petrol 2.0T in S trim. V70 D5 prices start from £23,960 and the S80 D5 from £22,340.

Combined fuel consumption figures are 47.1mpg (S60), 44.1mpg (V70) and 46.3mpg (S80). All models meet Euro III emissions standards.
