Our client is actively recruiting for a Classic Car Technician to join their growing team. You will carry out a variety of work on veteran, vintage and classic vehicles from the early 1900s to the late 1960s/early 1970s. Most British makes covered, but particularly Rolls-Royce and Bentley, Alvis, Austin and Morris as well as iconic sports cars from Austin Healey, Jaguar and MG.
* Engine and gearbox rebuilds: fully stripping unit down to component parts, checking all components for reusability/replacement, identifying new parts required, cleaning, bagging and labelling parts in an orderly manner to assist with rebuilding, rebuild unit and refit to vehicle.
* Axle rebuilds: identify problems, remove components, check for wear, identify parts required, rebuild and refit to vehicle. Also includes fitting uprated diffs as required.
* Brake servicing and overhaul (both mechanical and hydraulic brake systems): to include full strip downs of hubs and drums, fitting new brake linings or sending for relining, running brake pipes/fitting flexible cables.
* Suspension and steering: identifying faults, repairing/replacing joints, kingpins, bushes, etc. Setting tracking, camber and caster.
* Rewiring, either by fitting a new, off-the-shelf loom, or running individual cables or making up a loom if none available. This includes stripping out old wiring, following wiring diagrams and fitting new loom/cables in place.
* Regular servicing following appropriate schedules
* Partial and full restorations including stripping a car back to its chassis and component parts, overhauling all components ready for rebuilding, rebuilding vehicle to high standard.
* Occasional ash-frame work
* Use of lathe and milling machine, etc, to fabricate or repair parts
* Mig welding and oxy/acetylene welding, brazing and silver soldering
Duties:
* Perform all work assigned in a professional manner
* Repair and maintain a variety of vehicles as requested
* Strip, label, store and reassemble parts in an organised manner with meticulous attention to detail
* Fault find, often without modern diagnostic tools
* Assess and identify parts required to assist with ordering process
* Report findings to enable written estimates for customers
* Report any further work required outside scope of original job
* Keep detailed time sheets, noting all parts used from stock
* Report any faults with equipment to Ian
* Carry out incoming/outgoing checks and assist preparing vehicles for collection
General:
* Use overalls and safety equipment provided as the situation requires
* Be able to work well within a small team
* Have a positive and “can do” attitude
* Be passionate about the classic car world
* Uphold the good reputation of our client
* Carry out your work as a member of the MVE team to the highest possible standard, asking for assistance/guidance when required.
* Attend shows as required (which may involve working at weekends on occasion)
