Review

The new Toyota Corolla, will be launched in its ninth generation January 2, 2002. The carmaker says the all-new Corolla range is developed with the European market in mind.

It will be available in four bodystyles from launch, including a new Corolla Verso, three and five-door hatchbacks and an estate.

The engine choice is two 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engines and a selection of four petrol engines, ranging from a 1.4 to a 1.6 and a 1.8-litre version (Verso only), all with VVT-i. Topping the range is a highly tuned 1.8-litre with VVTL-i, a 189bhp T Sport Version that features VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), traction control and brake assist and a six-speed manual gearbox.

The 189bhp Corolla T Sport is capable of reaching 140mph and accelerating from 0 to 62mph in 8.4 seconds.

The existing S, GS, and GLS badging has been replaced with T2, T3, T Spirit and T Sport. The entry level three-door hatch 1.4 T2 priced at £10,795 OTR. The current Coralla 1.4S is priced at £8,960 OTR.

New Corolla has four airbags, ABS/EBD, a CD/radio and remote central locking as standard across the range.
