##Daihatsu--right##The departure of UK managing director Paul Williams has done nothing to restore Daihatsu dealers' confidence. The franchise has dropped to second from bottom in the ratings. Mr Williams's 'crime' was going for volume at the expense of profit. It is worth bearing in mind that Daihatsu is one of the few remaining UK importers not owned directly by the manufacturer. Inchcape claims its “rolling contract” with the factory is secure but there must a temptation for the Japanese to believe they could do a better job themselves.
