The Office of Fair Trading has warned carmakers they face legal action by failing to offer fleet-style discounts to dealer groups.

An OFT spokesman said some of the 17 manufacturers contacted had provided data which was being analysed. Others had failed to respond. The deadline was December 22.

"Those who do not comply could be taken to court under the Fair Trading Act," said the spokesman.

Reg Vardy chairman Peter Vardy said manufacturers' responses to the new legislation "fell short of the actions intended".
