BYD is launching its Denza B5 premium 4x4 in the UK, aiming to position it as a serious challenger to the Land Rover Defender.

The B5, which debuted in China as the Bao 5, is one of several new models being introduced under BYD’s premium Denza brand, ahead of sales starting in 2026.

Denza, originally founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz and now wholly owned by BYD.

Built on BYD’s ladder-frame platform, the B5’s plug-in hybrid system produces up to 677bhp and 561lb ft of torque - outpacing even the Defender V8, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor on each axle.

A 31.8kWh battery, which forms part of the structure, gives an electric-only range of up to 78 miles on China’s CLTC cycle - expected to be around 50 miles on European roads.

The B5 will be joined by two other Denza models: the Z9 GT grand tourer and the D9 MPV. All three signal BYD’s intention to expand its premium product offering in the UK, with a stronger focus on hybrid powertrains amid softening EV demand.

The Z9 GT sits on BYD’s bespoke e3 Platform and offers advanced features including a triple-motor configuration, dual-motor rear steering, and a turning circle comparable to a compact city car.

Also making its debut is the Denza D9, a large MPV aimed at the family and company car buyer. It promises a high level of comfort, smart cabin tech, and electrified drivetrains to rival models like the Lexus LM.

“Our goal is to bring a premium new-energy vehicle option to UK customers,” said Stella Li, executive vice president of BYD. “Denza blends European design with our strength in electrification, and we believe UK customers will value that combination.”

Beyond Denza, BYD will also introduce the Seal 06 plug-in hybrid saloon/estate next year, targeting buyers in the BMW 3 Series segment.
