US automotive parts maker Delphi Automotive Systems is to close its Southampton factory, with the loss of 120 jobs, as part of a worldwide restructure.

The cutbacks, which involve 11,500 jobs, come in the face of a slowing US economy and uncertainty in the global car manufacturing industry, which is suffering from oversupply.

Colin Lumber, T&G regional industrial organiser, said: “The T&G in Southampton is totally opposed to the closure of the Delphi plant in the city. We will be seeking a meeting with the local management as a matter of urgency.

“This news has come out of the blue and we will want to find out exectly what is planned for our members.”
