Used car dealers are being encouraged to 'exceed customers' expectations' with the launch of a new guide published by the RMI.

“The retail motor industry must strive not just to meet, but to exceed the expectations of today's' customer,” said David Evans, RMI chief executive, at the launch of the 'RMI guide to recommended trading practice and consumer law for used car sales.'

The guide, produced in conjunction with HPI, has been designed to bring together a reference source on all aspects of used car trading and guidance for used car retailers to increase the industry's commitment to customer satisfaction and high standards.

“A used car buyer needs to be assured that not only will a vehicle have been subject to a comprehensive physical and mechanical examination before the vehicle is bought , but that also any fault subsequently discovered will be dealt with in a positive, knowledgable way,” said Mr Evans.

Topics covered in the guide include, consumer law, vehicle valuation and appraisal, VAT and record keeping, advertising, warranty and auctions.
