A Government-funded programme is offering garages, bodyshops and repairers free surveys of their energy usage to identify savings.

Action Energy claims the automotive trade in general could cut operating bills by up to 20 per cent by implementing low-cost and no-cost efficiency measures.

And the organisation, run by the Carbon Trust, says its assessments can help put thousands of pounds back into individual businesses' profit margins.

“Too many companies see their energy spend as a fixed cost, but it isn't,” says Action Energy director Garry Felgate. “By implementing even the simplest efficiency measures companies can cut costs dramatically.” Along with free efficiency surveys, interest-free loans payable over four years are offered under the initiative to help companies fund replacement or upgrades to existing facilities.

One business that is making changes as a result of an Action Energy assessment is Ninemeister, a Porsche repair and restoration specialist in Warrington, Cheshire.

Managing director Colin Belton says: “The survey provided us with lots of ideas that can be implemented in the short term and included in our forward planning. The advice we were given will help us make savings that will significantly impact on our bottom line.”
