BMW has officially revealed its new 6-series coupe, which is to go on sale here by next summer.

Styled by design boss Chris Bangle, the man behind the controversial 7-series, 5-series and Z4, it boasts a low roof line with heavily contoured front and side panels and lamps like its stablemates.

It's the first BMW coupe to wear the 6-series badge since 1989 and will come with a 333bhp 4.4-litre V8 mated to one of three different six-speed transmissions, including an automatic 'box. Two further petrol engines will be offered at launch – a 272bhp 3.6-litre straight-six and a 333bhp 4.4-litre V8.

A 3.0-litre diesel is expected in 2005. BMW is also rumoured to be considering a 500bhp V10 M6 penned for 2005 after the M5 hits showrooms late 2004.

The hard-topped four-seater will make its official debut at Sept-ember's Frankfurt Motor Show and be in UK showrooms by April. A cabriolet will debut at the Geneva show in March and go on sale next summer.
