More than 155,000 cars were produced in the UK in September, of which over 107,000 were for the export market and 48,000 for the home market.

Total car production in September 2004 was 1.2% higher than in September 2003. Production for the home market in September 2004 was 2.1% higher than in September 2003, while production for the export market was 0.7% lower.

Seasonally adjusted total car production in the three months to September decreased by 0.3% compared with the previous three months. Home production also fell in this period, by 13.8%, but this was partially offset by a rise of 8.4% in export production.

In comparison with the same three months a year ago, total production fell by 4.5%. Home production fell by 14.8%, but this was partially offset by a rise in export production of 1.8%, caused mainly by the strong growth in production for the export market in July 2004.
