Alfa Romeo is planning a new ownership package that covers all servicing costs and pan-European breakdown assistance for up to five years or 100,000 miles.

The scheme was launched in Italy last month and is being rolled out across Europe.

However, at this stage Alfa Romeo has not committed to a launch date in Britain and is still evaluating costs. Similar servicing packages from BMW and Honda cost between £300 and £500 for five years, while Mini's similar tlc package is £100. Each scheme covers scheduled maintenance costs for parts and labour over five years.

The proposed Alfa package is designed to regain motorists' trust in the Italian brand, which has been battered by repeated poor performances in reliability and ownership satisfaction surveys. It came bottom in this year's What Car?/JD Power survey, which rated owners' satisfaction with the quality of their car and the service they received from dealers.
