Audi will offer an Avant version of its new A6 next spring to rival models like the Mercedes-Benz E-class estate and the BMW 5-series Touring.

A new entry level 180bhp 2.7-litre V6 diesel unit will be added to the engine line-up, which otherwise is the same as the saloon version – including the flagship 335bhp 4.2-litre V8 unit, 3.2-litre FSI and 2.4-litre petrol V6s and the 3.0-litre TDI. Four-wheel drive quattro version will be available with the larger engines.

The new Avant is more than 10cm longer than its predecessor and has an extra 70 litres of luggage space when the rear bench is folded. It also has a luggage bar which slides on to rails in the boot floor to prevent bags from sliding.

The automatic tailgate gets new light clusters to bring it into line with the revised A4 Avant and recently launched A3 Sportback.

On sale from April, prices are expected to start at about £25,000 for the SE variant. The manufacturer sold 3,982 A6s in the UK in 2003 and will be aiming for increased sales with the Avant.
