The Automotive Academy will take part in a key two-day skills event aimed at suppliers to the automotive industry.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Supplier Campus aims to help suppliers through a series of workshops, seminars and business presentations.

The event, called Providing Skills for Business Needs, takes place at the Royal Court Hotel in Coventry on November 17 and 18.

Among the companies making presentations will be Jaguar and Land Rover, MG Rover, Bentley, Honda, Avon Automotive and GKN.

Alan Begg, Automotive Academy chief executive, said: "We will be using this opportunity to reinforce our message on the vital need for a new approach to skills training in the UK.

"We need to ensure that training in the automotive sector is developed to globally competitive standards, which every firm operating in our industry can access.

"It’s also vital that training is consistent throughout the country and we are busily working on new methods to make this happen."

Begg was recently appointed to one of six industrial positions on the Department of Trade and Industry’s new Technology Strategy Board. This major Government initiative will direct £320-million of DTI funding to support businesses investing in new and emerging technologies.
