The new BMW 1 Series will go on sale in September priced from £15,690 to £20,800.

Powered by a choice of four engines from launch, the 1 Series will be available in three different models - Base, SE and Sport - and eight different body colours, three of which are unique to the 1 Series.

Specification for the Base model includes remote central locking, six airbags, Dynamic Stability Control combined with Dynamic Traction Control as standard, run-flat tyres, front electric windows, engine starter button, adjustable steering column along with passenger seat height adjustment and BMW Business CD player as standard.

The SE adds automatic air-conditioning, leather-covered multi-function steering wheel and rear Park Distance Control as standard. An auto-dimming interior mirror counters the glare from other motorists' headlights.

All Sport models come with 16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning, sports suspension, sports seats, sports steering wheel, front fog lights and black trim. The four engine choices are the 116i, 120i, 118d and 120d. The entry level petrol engine, the 116i is a 115bhp 1.6-litre unit, with a 0-62mph sprint time of 10.8 seconds and a combined fuel consumption figure of 37.7mpg.

The 120i offers a 150bhp Valvetronic 2.0-litre engine with a six-speed manual and a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds.

The flagship diesel will be the 163bhp 120d, with a 0-62mpg time of 7.9 seconds and fuel consumption of 49.6mpg on the combined cycle, while the 122bhp 118d uses the same 2.0-litre engine and promises to be just as frugal with a benchmark acceleration time from 0-62mph in 10 seconds.
