The increase in the national minimum wage from the start of this month is expected to benefit 1.3m workers in the UK.

The hourly rate for adults has increased to £5.05 from £4.85, while the youth rate, paid to 18-21-year olds, has risen to £4.25 from £4.10. The rate for 16- and 17-year-olds remains at £3.00 but will be reviewed in February 2006.
