Ford Motor Company is planning to cut at least 2,000 jobs at its plants in Europe this winter.

The world's biggest carmaker is likely to close factories and cut jobs in the US and continental Europe, although fears are growing that the group's UK plants and operations could also be affected.

The newspaper said the cuts will be part of a global restructuring effort that Ford plans to announce in January.

On Thursday, the Detroit-based company posted a loss for the third quarter, with a consumer shift away from its SUV lineup and soaring material costs contributing to a $1.2bn loss in its North American auto business.

A spokesman for Ford's own-brand business in the UK, which employs about 14,000 people at four plants, said the company plans to cut about 10,000 jobs worldwide, although he could not confirm the report of 2,000 jobs in Europe.
