Ignition system parts supplier NGK UK had to establish a temporary headquarters last week when its base in Hemel Hempsted was caught up in the Buncefield fuel depot disaster.

Staff were prevented from entering the Maylands Avenue headquarters after emergency services established an exclusion zone around the blazing fuel depot.

Brian Childs, deputy managing director, sales and marketing, says the company established an off-site management centre and office early on the Monday following the fire’s outbreak. Firefighters spent three days fighting the blaze.

Remote access to NGK’s ordering processes and telephone reception enabled it to continuing receiving and processing orders, although these couldn’t be packaged and dispatched until staff were allowed to return to the building.

Childs says the resultant order backlog was cleared last Friday. "Although we arranged emergency supplies direct to our customers from our European colleagues it was not necessary to use this facility," he adds.
