To coincide with the introduction of the 2005 Porter range of vans and specialist vehicles, Piaggio UK has launched the zero-emission Electric Porter.

Powered by a high-torque 10.5 kW motor, the Electric Porter offers a top speed of 35mph, range of up to 85 miles on a single charge, and a payload capacity of 470 to 560kg.

Piaggio LTV sales manager, Mark Brown says: “Electric power combines the Porter’s agility and capability with a real solution to the changing needs of the commercial vehicle market.”

The Electric Porter will be available in five versions – Panel Van, Glass Van, Pick-Up, Tipper and Big-Deck – with prices starting from £15,000, plus VAT. All models are exempt from both road fund licence and the London Congestion Charge.

Although the Electric Porter will not be available until later in the year, Piaggio says several large companies have shown interest in the vehicle. It anticipates its main customers will be utility companies and councils.

As a result of recent restructuring, 2005 sales figures for the entire Porter range are projected at a modest 400-plus units, with the aim of expanding the base of 32 dealers to 50 by the end of the year.
