Volvo has added its ‘clean inside and out’ concept that provides electronic climate control with an 'air quality system' and pollen filter, plus interiors designed to create an allergy-free interior - ideal for sufferers of asthma, hayfever or eczema.

To keep the air inside the cabin free from pollen and dust, in addition to the standard electronic climate control and pollen filter, all models in the Volvo range (except the current C70 convertible) also have an interior air quality system (IAQS) that uses electronic sensors to monitor the amount of pollutants in the incoming air and automatically closes the air inlets when levels rise too high – for instance, when driving in busy city traffic, traffic hold-ups or in tunnels. A combined filter with active carbon eliminates odour surges and lowers the levels of nitrogen dioxides, ground-level ozone and hydrocarbons.

Another environmental initiative which Volvo has created is PremAir® which automatically cleans the air passing through the radiator to convert up to 75% of ground level ozone - created by mixing nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and sunshine - into pure oxygen.

  • Volvo has an expert ‘nose team’ that sniff tests all components to be used in Volvo car interiors to make sure they are inoffensive and safe. The components are heated to replicate a car parked in the sun all day, as smells intensify as the car interior heats up.
