Inchcape is in talks with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation about a joint venture in China.

Inchcape chief executive Peter Johnson, says: “We are re-examining the Chinese market as the country's big manufacturers are seeking to boost the quality of their retail networks.

"Manufacturers want major distribution and retail operations. We have the skills as importers and distributors throughout the world. It is that kind of opportunity we are talking about."

Johnson said there were five or six ‘really interesting’ markets in China and Inchcape needed to get the right manufacturer as a partner.

“We are talking to a number of substantial companies in China, including SAIC in Shanghai. "There's nothing on paper yet, nothing signed, but we are having a lot of interesting conversations with a number of people."
