Volkswagen considers workforce cuts

Volkswagen Group confirmed yesterday it could cut up to 14,000 production jobs, mostly at Wolfsburg, while hoping to avoid compulsory redundancies among its 125,000 European employees.

VW also aims to target surplus administrative posts, but has pledged to honour its agreements with trade unions that protect German workers from compulsory layoffs until the end of 2011 in return for a wage freeze agreed last year.
