Despite retaining less than a quarter of its value, a price tag of £4,699 means owners of the Kelisa lose less money than anyone in the mainstream car market.
Despite costing around £2,000 more new, better used value retention gives the Toyota Aygo second place with a running cost figure less than a penny per mile more than the Kelisa. An Aygo 1.0 VVT-I costs 15.2 pence per mile to run over three years and 60,000 miles.
Citroen and Chevrolet are the only two other manufacturers to make the top 10, with two variants of the C1 and the Matiz.
Running costs are calculated by CAP Monitor, based on depreciation, servicing and routine maintenance.
CAP Monitor forecast manager Jeff Knight said: “Depreciation is the largest element in the running costs equation and there are two ways to keep it to a minimum. Strong image and desirability in the used market will maximise the amount of money you’ll get back after buying a new car but the best way to keep the depreciation bill down is to spend as little as possible in the first place.
“Despite only retaining 23% of its value new, the low front-end list price of £4,699 for the Perodua Kelisa means the least money lost over a three-year period of ownership, making it the cheapest car in Britain to live with.”
