Alec Murray, chairman of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF), has said the organisation is in a strong financial position after a tumultuous period of change over the last two years.

Murray addressed attendees at the RMIF’s annual dinner last night, saying: "The main aim for franchised dealers in 2008 will be to secure a renewal of a sector specific Block Exemption on the best possible terms for members.

"We believe that the 2002 regulation has worked for the industry and the sector should continue to be regulated in this way. In addition we are also advising members on how best to approach the issue of VAT reclaims.”

He went on to say the RMIF would be focussing on getting its independent members access to manufacturer technical data, to allow them to work on newer vehicles with complex operation systems.

The RMIF’s annual report showings its member numbers for the 12 months to May 2007 will be revealed just before Christmas.
