Name:Steve Catling

How did you get into the automotive business?
Pearl was a family business started by my brother-in law. I had worked with him part-time while at school and when I was old enough he offered me a job.

What does your job entail?
Until the management buyout I was director of purchasing and operations and company secretary. I still take care of the purchasing negotiations and operations and logistics.

How will your job change over the next few years?
I want to step back from the day-to-day responsibilities and move the company forward through efficiencies and offering the best service with a quality product at a competitive price.

What advice would you give to young people joining the industry?
There are great opportunities, whether it is in sales, warehousing or IT.

What’s the worst career move you’ve ever made?
Not signing for West Ham FC when I had the chance.

  And the best?
Recently acquiring the company with the MBO team.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
To have achieved our short-term goals and to be making acquisitions.
