If a worker complains then it is likely the employer will be investigated by an inspector of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). It is reported that between 2005 and 2006 more than 61,000 calls were made to the NMW help line and 25,314 workers recovered over £3.2 million.
