Name: David Smith
Company: Continental Tyre Group Ltd
Job: Managing director
Age: 41

How did you get in to the automotive business?
I have always been a petrolhead, so when the opportunity came up four years ago to become financial director at Continental, it seemed right.

What does your job entail?
Everything from meeting customers to setting strategy with the added responsibility of the FD position as well.

How will your job change over the next few years?
I’m not sure.

Other jobs?
I have worked for manufacturing businesses at financial director and managing director level.

What advice would you give to young people joining the industry?
Learn your trade first, get your qualifications and have a career goal in mind, but don’t let this deter you from making a career decision that feels right for you.

What’s the worst career move you’ve ever made?
I’ve been very fortunate and learnt along the way so I can’t honestly say anything has been a bad career move.

And the best?
When I first started out, I went with what best suited my personality, so rather than going into accountancy I went into manufacturing. Just goes to show you should follow your instincts.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Am I too young to retire?
