The new smoke free laws come into force in England on 1st July 2007. The immediate steps you need to take are:

  • put up the required no-smoking signs at every entrance (A5 size) to the smoke free premises. Smaller (70 mm diameter ones) can be used if the premises are only for staff but at least one A5 poster must still be displayed.

  • put up the required (70 mm dia) sign in each compartment of a smoke free vehicle.

  • close any indoor staff smoking rooms and if possible, make arrangements for a not enclosed smoking shelter.

  • make arrangements to ensure staff and other visitors are aware of the legal requirement to be smoke free. If you want a policy to inform staff of the requirements, and the ability to discipline them if they refuse, then this can be downloaded from:
