Nanjing Automobile is planning to develop a Healey sports car following its acquisition of rights to use the brand name.

Although the expansion of its range is likely to take several years. A source close to Nanjing says: “The first priority is to re-establish the MG brand, but there is considerable potential in the Healey and Austin-Healey names.”

Talks over the names had seemed to bog down, and the announcement was a surprise to many.

“Nanjing upped its offer, and the Healey family decided the time was right,” says the source. The formal agreement is between Nanjing Automobile Group, HFI Automotive and Healey Automobile Consultants.

HFI designs, develops and manufactures sports cars and will work with the family of Sir Donald Healey. They will want to ensure future models are worthy of his name.

Nanjing believes there is global potential for sales of a born-again Healey, which would be a larger and more powerful sportscar than the MG TF.

The revival of the Healey name is likely to increase the appeal of Nanjing’s range to dealers.
