Law - Data Protection Act – collection of personal information through a website

Under the DPA principles of fair processing such collectors of information should make clear.

  • who is operating the website including an address and the identity if anyone else collecting the personal information.

  • the reasons for the processing of information.

  • any other information to make the process fair e.g. telling individuals if you will disclose the information to third parties.

  • how to obtain a copy of an individual’s personal information.

    The Information Commissioner has indicated that statements such as ‘click here to see our privacy statement’ is not enough.
