Tyre maker Continental has withdrawn marketing claims that 'nothing stops better than a Continental tyre' after complaints from rivals.

The Advertising Standards Authority probed whether the manufacturer's claim could be substantiated, after objections from Michelin and Goodyear Dunlop.

Continental provided results from a TUV braking test in Germany in which its tyre outperformed rivals in the dry and the wet.

However the ASA ruled that because the test only involved one type of tyre, Continental's general claim was misleading.

It warned Continental not to use the claim again.
