A complaint about a national advertisement for Renault's Twingo Dynamique has been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

The ad was said to have exaggerated the environmental friendliness of the car.

Headed "The cost is the only small thing about it", it stated "CO2 emissions 135g/km ... eco2". It was set against a green background and showed an image of the car with leaves coming out of its exhaust. Text on one of the leaves stated "economoical ecological".

Renault said not all their cars were advertised using the Eco2 logos and that certain criteria had to be met. These are defined in a brochure and on its website, which explains what Renault are doing to help minimise environmental impact of motoring.

The car manufacturer continued that the Eco2 logo was used not only because it was linked to its campaign to help reduce CO2 but because it referred to the combination of economical and ecological efforts they had made.

However, ASA has told Renault not to repeat the ecological logo and to ensure that the Eco2 logo was clearly qualified to explain the basis of the scheme.

The ad will not appear in its current form again.
