Steven Field, Group MD Steven Field (43), Group MD, DWS Bodyworks

How did you get in to the automotive business?
At the age of 14 I started a Saturday job at Jubilee Road Motors in Waterlooville, near Portsmouth. I would work each Saturday morning and in school holidays. The garage carried out mechanical work, MoTs and body repairs, so I had a very varied day depending on what needed to be swept clean next!

What does your job entail?
Overseeing the operational management of the group, short, medium and long-term business strategy, senior customer relations, group procurement, tenders for new business, finance, debtor management and more.

How will your job change over the next few years?
Not too much.

What advice would you give to young people joining the industry?
You have two ears and one mouth, use them in proportion.

What’s the worst career move you’ve ever made?
No regrets really. Once during an appraisal, a CEO asked where I wanted to be in two years. I told him I wanted to be CEO. He’s still there – I’m not!

And the best?
Giving up my paper round and starting my Saturday job at Jubilee Road Motors.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Fat club trying to lose weight and give up drink.
