Almost half of motorists think they have been ripped off by car mechanics, according to a survey.

The poll by insurance.co.uk claimed swindles cost the public £8 billion in over-charged, unnecessary or poor-quality work.

Up to 34 per cent of those questioned believed they have paid £100 more they should to have their car serviced, while 51 per cent estimated they have been over-charged £500.

When asked if they felt cheated by a mechanic, 48 per cent of the 1,376 car owners surveyed said they had.

Steve Grainger, head of insurance.co.uk, said: “While the vast majority of car mechanics are entirely reputable, our research highlights that there are a number of rogue tradesmen.”
