Volkswagen has shown off its new roadster concept for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show.

VW is trying to strike the balance between performance and efficiency, so the Concept Bluesport will return 65mpg and emits 113g/km of carbon dioxide.

To improve fuel economy and emissions further drivers can engage an ‘Eco’ mode to activate an automatic Stop-Start engine technology and braking energy regeneration.

The two-seat roadster comes with a four-cylinder 178bhp 2.0-litre TDI engine. Power is transferred to the rear wheels through a six-speed dual clutch DSG gearbox and sees the Concept BlueSport accelerate from standstill to 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds and go on to a top speed of 140 mph.

VW has no immediate plans for production but is sure to gauge reaction to the new concept over the next week in Detroit.
