Seat has unveiled a new petrol/electric version of its Leon which is due to reach showrooms by 2014.
The initial aim is for Twin Drive-equipped Seats to run on electricity in urban areas, switching to petrol or diesel for longer trips.
So-called ‘plug-in’ hybrid propulsion, as well as the eventual phasing out of the internal combustion engine in future Ecomotive models, is also on the agenda for Seat.
The Twin Drive Leon concept features an electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries and extensive modification of the gearbox, brakes, heating and cooling systems.
The Spanish brand’s engineers are now researching and testing electrical propulsion techniques, recharging and vehicle range.
