Campaign support continues to grow

Leading industry figures are backing the AM Buy A Car campaign. At the same time, the national and regional press has started to move its focus away from the doom and gloom in new car sales towards the positive of unprecedented buying opp-ortunities for consumers.

At the AM Awards on Wednesday we collected the business cards from more than 300 guests at the prestigious event in Birmingham willing to give their support to our campaign - see below for a full list of supporters.

Motor finance provider Black Horse is among those companies giving its backing. Its managing director, Chris Sutton, said: “This campaign is a step in the right direction in helping to restore customers’ buying confidence.

“Black Horse dealers can further help to stimulate sales by giving their customers access to credit at the point of sale.”

Eddie Hawthorne, managing director of Arnold Clark Automobiles, said: “The mainstream media is now giving the same message as the AM campaign, which is that now is an excellent time to buy a car.

“The only way we are going to get out of this current economic climate is to sell our way out.

“Doing nothing – or being negative – is a recipe for disaster,” he warned.

Another dealer group, Surrey-based Trident Garages has used the campaign’s template letter to send to MPs to raise awareness and generate support for the campaign.

But managing director Richard Roberts said the Government and the Opposition were failing to address dealers’ plights, instead focusing disproportionately on credit availability.

He received a reply from the Conservative MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, Philip Hammond.

Hammond, also shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, told Roberts the Conservatives had proposed establishing a national loan guarantee scheme, guaranteeing £50 billion of new loans to businesses – far more effective, the MP claims, in freeing up the credit market than “complicated” Government schemes.

But Roberts said: “Neither political party has picked up on the direct support dealers need.

“We are not finding it hard to get credit. The critical factor is consumer confidence which has to be addressed before UK sales grow.

“The AM campaign, together with our own efforts, is making the difference to us. “We are doing better than expected,” Roberts added.
